2. App Description
"JunkJournal" is a creative Android app for creating digital junk journals. These are scrapbook-style pages with photos, text, stickers, freehand drawings, and washi tape as well as photo calendar diaries. Users can freely design journal pages, apply background textures and photo filters (Vintage, Faded, Black & White, Warm), take photos using the camera, and share pages as PNG images. The calendar offers multiple view types (Split Preview, Photo Grid, Polaroid, Timeline). The app is aimed at creative individuals who want to visually capture memories, ideas, and everyday moments.
3. Legal Basis
The processing of locally stored data is based on Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (Performance of a contract) – the data processing is necessary to provide the app functionality requested by the user.
Camera access is only granted upon the user's explicit consent pursuant to Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR by granting the camera permission in the operating system. This consent can be withdrawn at any time in the Android system settings under "Apps > JunkJournal > Permissions".
4. Data Processed
The app processes the following categories of data exclusively locally on the user's device:
- User-created content: Journal titles, page elements (text, images, stickers, freehand drawings, and washi tape including position, size, and rotation), page background colors and textures, applied photo filters, and calendar entries (one photo per day with the associated date).
- Captured photos: Images taken via the camera feature, which are stored in the app's internal storage.
- Metadata: Creation and modification timestamps of journals and pages.
Purpose of processing: Providing the app's core functionality – creating, editing, viewing, and sharing digital junk journal pages and calendar diaries. No personal data is transmitted to servers or shared with third parties.
5. Permissions
5.1 Camera (android.permission.CAMERA)
Used to take photos directly within the app (e.g. for journal pages or calendar entries). This permission is optional; the app functions without camera access as long as no photos need to be taken. Captured images are stored exclusively locally in the app's internal storage and are not transmitted to third parties.
The app does not require internet access and does not request network permissions. It also does not request access to the microphone, location, or contacts.
6. Local Data Storage
All user data is stored exclusively locally on the device:
- SQLite database (
junk_journal_database): Contains journals, pages, page elements (text, stickers, freehand drawings, washi tape, and image references), and calendar entries. Stored in the operating system's private app directory. - Image files: Captured and cropped photos are stored in the app's internal storage (
filesDir) and are only accessible to the app itself. - Temporary files: When taking photos and sharing pages as PNG images, temporary files are created in the cache directory (
cacheDir). These may be automatically deleted by the operating system at any time.
Deletion options: Users can delete individual journals, pages, and elements directly within the app. A complete deletion of all data can be achieved by uninstalling the app or by clearing the app data in the Android system settings under "Apps > JunkJournal > Storage > Clear data".
7. No Data Transmission
No data is transmitted to external servers. The app has no internet access and does not communicate with servers, cloud services, or any other third-party systems. All data remains entirely on the user's device.
When sharing a journal page (export as a PNG image), the file is passed to a third-party application chosen by the user via the Android sharing function. Further processing is subject to the privacy policy of that third-party application.
8. No Third-Party Services
The app does not use any third-party services for data processing. In particular, no analytics, advertising, tracking, or crash reporting services are used. No SDKs from Google Analytics, Firebase, Facebook, Crashlytics, or comparable providers are employed.
The open-source libraries used (Jetpack Compose, Room, Coil, Navigation Compose, ExifInterface) serve exclusively the app's local functionality and do not transmit any data to external servers. ExifInterface is used solely to read image orientation (EXIF orientation tag); GPS or other location data is not accessed.
9. Android Auto-Backup
Android may automatically back up app data (including the SQLite database and locally stored images) to your Google account if you have enabled this in your device settings. This is a feature of the Android operating system and is managed by Google. You can disable this in your Android settings under “Backup”.
10. Data Security
All data is stored exclusively in the private app storage of the Android operating system and is not accessible to other apps. The app does not make any network connections, so no data is transmitted over the internet.
11. Data Retention
All user-created data (journals, pages, images, calendar entries) is stored on the device until the user deletes it independently – either within the app or by uninstalling the app or clearing the app data via the Android system settings. There is no automatic deletion period, as the data is stored exclusively locally and is intended for the user's ongoing use.
Temporary files in the cache directory (e.g. when sharing pages) are automatically cleaned up by the operating system as needed.
12. Children
The app is not specifically directed at children under 16 years of age and does not collect any personal data. Since no data is collected, there is no particular risk in terms of child protection.
13. Your Rights
Data subjects have the following rights under applicable data protection laws, in particular the GDPR:
- Right of access (Art. 15 GDPR): You have the right to request information about the data processed about you.
- Right to rectification (Art. 16 GDPR): You may request the correction of inaccurate data.
- Right to erasure (Art. 17 GDPR): You may request the deletion of your data. Since all data is stored locally on your device, you can delete it yourself at any time.
- Right to restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR).
- Right to data portability (Art. 20 GDPR): You can transfer your data by exporting journal pages as PNG images.
- Right to object (Art. 21 GDPR): You have the right to object to the processing of your data.
- Right to withdraw consent (Art. 7(3) GDPR): The camera permission granted can be withdrawn at any time in the Android system settings under "Apps > JunkJournal > Permissions".

14. Right to Lodge a Complaint
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a competent data protection supervisory authority pursuant to Art. 77 GDPR if you believe that the processing of your personal data violates the GDPR. You may contact the supervisory authority of your place of residence, your place of work, or the place of the alleged violation.
